With a large growing youth population, in Santa Maria Cunen district, the local people took matters in their own hand and created an association to oversee local development and created the Bilingual Mixed Intercultural collegio in 1999. The aim was to initiate training of bilingual teachers (Spanish and Kiche) for primary school education. Today over 200 teachers have been graduated. The school started with two small classrooms, and no more than 40 students. Today, there are over 900 students in grades 1 to 12, and over 50 teachers and support staff. Of the over 500 students who have graduated from the school, over 220 have teaching positions, and over 260 have gone on to get a university or technical training. Their ability to earn a good income, and
support their families, has improved the economy and well-being of the Cunen area.
Our goal is to support the Cunen School in Guatemala by contributing annually to the operating
costs of the school, and to provide scholarships to students who would not otherwise be
able to attend.
